Soccer Ball Cake

I made this soccer ball cake for Owen's 3rd birthday party. The ball pan is a Wilton pan I rented from Bulk Barn. I had a minor scare when I went in to pick up the pan because they told me somebody had rented it already! luckily it was in the back being cleaned, I needed it that night!.

The cake was fairly easy to make. The most frustrating part of decorating the cake was trying to tint the icing a green that would match the colour of grass. I used Kelly green with a hint of black to make a hunter green, but ended up adding some yellow to it to make it a little more like grass. It took me about an hour to get the green close enough that I was happy about it. I think that those types of things will just get easier with practice.

The total cake including baking, making and tinting icing and decorating took me about 10 hours. Two hours for baking friday and then about 8 hours to decorate and make icing on saturday. I'm sure for most people it wouldn't have taken that long, but my hand was killing me from making all of the stars on the soccer ball & then my icing would get too warm from my hands & I'd have to put it in the fridge for a bit. This was also the first time I used the grass tip #233. It was awesome and really easy to use.

I am happy with how it turned out & Owen was really pleased with his soccer ball cake too!
