Superhero Cupcakes

I was inspired by some cupcakes I saw on pinterest and knew i had to make them for Noah's Superhero birthday party! I can't believe my little guy s now 3 years old! It was my first attempt at using fondant and I LOVED it!! It was much easier than I was anticipating, and I can see using it for future birthday cakes for my boys. The cupcakes turned out great and I learned a few things a long the way, which will make the next time I use fondant that much easier!

Dragon Cake Round #2

With it being the year of the Dragon, I asked my friend to help make another Dragon Cake for a Tet party. After 6 hours of decorating and caring for 4 little kids and 2 babies, we were finally finished! i don't see the making of another dragon cake any time soon, but we had fun :)

This time we chose to pipe stars and use some gummy lemons for the spine. We then sprayed Wilton Color Mist on the top of it - it turned out well :)

Dragon Cake

After finding some inspiration for a cake on-line, I decided that I needed to make this cake for our annual Tet/Chinese New Year party. With it being the "year of the dragon" it was perfect! I wanted to use m&m's to cover the body but they aren't sold as individual colours in Canada, so after much debate decided on the red & white gummy hearts. I took a poll amongst those shopping in the bulk barn, and the gummy hearts won hands down! most people thought they'd look more like scales, and I was just happy that the cheaper version won out :) I had the option of using pink and red (valentines) smarties, but they would also be more money. The cake wasn't for a huge group so I decided that the gummy hearts were "good enough" .

As I was decorating the cake I wished I went with the smarties! the gummy hearts weren't fitting together as I'd hoped and they kept falling off! oh well - lesson learned! Anyway, the cake was a hit with he kids and that's all that mattered. This weekend I'm working on a 2nd Dragon cake with a friend - we are going to take it to another Tet party! looking forward to seeing how this one turns out!
